About this filter

Eating vegetarian in Japan is more nuanced than it looks. Most savory broths use bonito (katsuobushi) or pork, and even items that read "vegetable" can include hidden animal-derived seasonings. This list filters menu items at major Japanese chains where the menu name and category contain no meat, poultry, or seafood. It is not a guarantee — confirm dashi and gelatin with the store before ordering. The list updates whenever official chain data changes.

Important caveat. Most miso soups and noodle broths in Japan contain bonito (fish) dashi even when not labeled. Many fried items share oil with shrimp/pork. If you are strict, avoid soup and fried sides, and tell the cashier you are vegetarian (in Japanese: "ベジタリアンです / Bejitarian desu").

How to verify at the store

Use these phrases to confirm specific ingredients with the staff. Japanese is what the staff understand best — show the Japanese line on your phone if pronunciation is hard.
